Weekend DIY Projects

WHEW!  What a day!  It has been a busy day, but in a good way.  First thing this morning we went out to the thrift shop to see what we could find. I was looking for glass ware and wicker baskets in particular.  I am super excited with my finds too.  I spent less than $15 on 4 baskets, 1 glass bowl, 1 large glass pillar, 6 glass drinking glasses, 1 terra cotta planter, and 2 glass tea cups.  Once we were done there we headed out to Hobby Lobby to pick up candle wicks, spray paint, and the crafts for my daughter's valentines.

I have lots of great projects planned and I owe my thanks to Pinterest.  I am sure most of you have heard of it by now.  A great place for inspiration and motivation.  There are so many wonderful ideas on there and the pin boards help me remember projects I want to do so I am more motivated to get out and do them.  Usually I would save them to my favorites and then totally forget about them!  Now I have constant reminders and pictures of what I need to do :)

Lets take a look at what I bought and what I accomplished today!

this will be our new fruit basket
I will keep this "as is" for now and when we move I will either paint it or line it.  It will be easier when I know what colors I will be using for our home :)

potato basket...now I need one for onions :)
All wicker items I bought were 99 cents. so you can bet I will be keeping my eyes open for more.  I LOVE baskets and they are a great way to spruce things up!

I will use this for decor.  It is so pretty that I think I will leave it alone and just hang it on a wall :)

Another wall hanging basket
The last basket I plan on painting, but who knows if I will or not.  If I do paint it I will use a bright color to make it "pop".  I found my inspiration for this project HERE.

My next set of inspiration came from HERE.  I am sure many of you have seen that you can melt your candles and then add them to smaller pretty glass jars, bowls, etc to help remove clutter.  I must admit I was so impressed with this and then came the "why in the world have I never thought of this?" moment.  It is genius!  Well this is what I came up with:

All my pretty candles!
I especially love the glass teacups.  Those I used vanilla cupcake and will put them in my kitchen window sill.  The bowl and the other white candle will go in each bathroom since both are fluffy towel scent.  and then I have mint and banana bread to strategically place somewhere in my home ;)

These were easy to make.  Just boil a pot of water and place the jars in the water (don't fully submerge you just want the boiling water on the sides) until they melt.  Mine took about 10-15 minutes to fully melt.  Then pour them in the glasses and place a wick in the middle.  Mine stuck just fine without using anything to hold them up.  I then cleaned out all the old jars very well and will save them for something else.  I am thinking they will make great storage jars for miscellaneous items like cotton balls, pens, bath salts, etc.  Just place a pretty label where the super sticky label was and maybe even paint them.

The next two I spray painted with silver Krylon glitter spray.  Silver is my favorite color and don't try to tell me silver is not a color ;)  I love the way these shimmer when lit and I may go back and pick up some more and try a different shimmer color.  Maybe pink or purple for my daughters room.  So cute!

These are super simple.  Just place upside down on newspaper and spray a thin coat.  Let dry 15 minutes and spray another thin coat.  Repeat doing this until you have the desired look you want.

And the last of the projects I will share after I have them completed (probably in the next couple of weeks).  I am making a lollipop tree and valentines for my daughters class.  We are excited to take this project on together and can't wait to see the end result!

Lastly, I will show you the extra glass ware I bought.  The large pillar is going to be painted, but I need to find at least 2 more pillars before I decide how I am going to paint them.  The two jars I am still debating on what I want to do with them.  Anyone have some suggestions?  I am open to new ideas :)  And the other glass I will use to make another candle when my jars start to get low.

Don't forget to find My Road to Savings on facebook and twitter to see the next great tip!
