Homemade Surface Cleaner

***** UPDATE 1/31/12 FOUND HERE *****

I actually made this homemade surface cleaner almost a week ago, but have not posted about it for some reason.  Somehow it just slipped my mind.  I think it works out alright though because now I have been using it for a week and have used it on many different messes and spills.  I just LOVE the smell of this spray.  I used tea tree oil and it is so crisp and clean smelling.

The smell isn't the only reason I love it though.  It cleans really really good!  No, I mean REALLY REALLY good!  My daughter spilled kool-aid on the counter (and we all know how that stains) and left it on there all night without me noticing it until morning.  I sprayed it and it immediately started to fade and when I wiped it was all gone!  I have always used Clorox Clean-Up in my kitchen and that stuff never took out kool-aid so I would have to revert to my magic eraser.  I am seriously in love with this surface spray.  It cut the grease splatter from cooking dinner and has held up to everything so far!

The other plus about this product is that I no longer worry about the cleaners my daughter is using when she helps clean.  There were only certain cleaners I liked her using because of all the chemicals and this totally erases that.  I am at ease knowing there are no toxic chemicals in this cleaner.

Homemade Surface Cleaner
2 Cups Water
2 tsp Borax $0.05
1/4 tsp Castile soap $0.02
20 Drops Tea Tree Oil  $0.25

Using a funnel place all ingredients in a spray bottle and shake vigorously until combined.  Again you will need to shake this up before using to combine because the ingredients will separate.

Can you believe it?!?  32 cents to make this cleaner!  Now that is a great price!  You can't beat that.  We are happy with it and love the gentle, soothing smell in our home instead of harsh, intrusive chemicals.

  4. I am trying to make most of my cleaners myself this year. This sounds perfect. I do have a question what is Castile soap? Do I need to buy it in a specialty shop?
I would LOVE it if you would be willing to share this at our party going on now-Monday. Thanks.

    1. I found my castile soap at target where all the body soaps and lotions are. I chose the "baby" unscented soap, but they have lavender and other scents. The brand is Dr. Bronner's it is also on sale through amazon right now with free shipping to prime members. Here's the link if you want to check it out.
