Shopping For the Month

I decided to do things a little different this month.  Instead of shopping bi-weekly I am going to do the bulk of my shopping once per month and go to the store weekly to pick up fresh produce, cheese, herbs, etc.  Since I am doing it that way my savings spending is now tracking though the end of February because that is what my grocery budget is slated for.  With everything I bought today I still have over $110 for the rest of the month.  I think we should be good since I mainly have produce to buy for the rest of the month.  Once I go through what all I bought today I will also show you what I have left to buy through the rest of the month.

I went to three stores today and I still have to go to Aldi to pick up milk, butter, celery, and oranges.  I am really happy with all the great food I have for the next month and am really happy that I have so much left to buy fresh produce for the next couple of weeks.

Not bad for a months worth of food.  The total for all stores together is $186.46.  Below you can see what I else I need to buy for the month and my monthly meal plan for February.  I may move things around especially if certain produce goes on sale.  For the rest of January I am making Lemon Chicken Spaghetti, Caprese Pasta, Macaroni and Cheese, and Chili.  We are going hiking on Sunday with some friends so we will probably go out to eat afterwards.

Let's take a look at what I still need to buy for the month:

And the tentative February meal plan:

What do you think?  Looks like I will make my budget this month and I think we have some really great meals planned for the month.  Lots of yummy dishes full of fresh veggies and fresh dairy!  For the sides I have tons of canned veggies, salad, and rice or noodles to add to the mix.  I will plan those by the day because they are so simple to whip up :)

    1. This is new as of this month. I think I am really going to like it. I am preparing because we might be moving into a nice country home soon which means no more convenience stores and picking up that "one" item you forgot. Hopefully this works and we get our new home soon!

  2. Impressive that you can plan ahead so far. I like shopping once a week since the deals are always changing and my tastes change. I'm also doing the envelope system, so anything I don't spend each week I put into savings. Good job!

    1. Everything can always be changed around on the calendar (I do it all the time...lol), but I don't shop sales specifically anymore. I am trying to prove that you can eat really good food on a budget. Another reason I am doing the monthly thing is because the house we are trying to buy is waaaaay out in the country which means no more multiple store runs. Everyone needs to find the best system for them and so far I like budgeting and planning instead hunting down sales and coupons. Much more free time for me and less food with preservatives or other additives. I am still working on cutting the preservatives out, but I am getting much better :)

I have considered doing the envelope system, but haven't started it yet. I may have to look into it more and give it a go ;)
